Over the centuries people from all walks of life at one point or another have shown hatred towards a group of people. In the nineteen-forties, Adolf Hitler had his armies march millions of people to their death. Before that Americans had African Americans as slaves. Here in the present, people are discriminating against the LGBTQ community. So no matter what time in history we look at, human kind has always looked down and hated what was different and misunderstood. But times are changing.
In recent events, something has taken place that in my mind is earth shattering. The Pope Francis has shown love for the LGBTQ community. Pope Francis stated that “what we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered”(CNN 2020). This is an amazing thing for the community. One of the most regarded people in the world is saying that everyone deserves to be love, and that we are all God’s children.
This can be a breath of fresh air for the community moving forward in our lives. No matter where we are from, sexual orientation, or gender identity, it is nice to know that some things are finally catching up with the times. Now my main question is directed towards the churches. Are yall going to stop siding with the political groups that aim to discriminate and make our lives a living hell? Take a page from Pope Francis’ book and show love for all people no matter if or how they differ from you. I hope that this is the spark that leads to separation of church and state in America. For those of you that know United States history, should know that was the way it was supposed to be all along. Somewhere along the line we as Americans lost sight of that. We also lost sight of “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” (Matthew 22:36-40).
I feel confident about what the future has to offer in terms of where we are headed with equality. I am also proud to be who I am and love helping others be themselves and live their lives the way they want to. Love will stomp hate every day of the week.
