Presidential Election: LGBT Edition

Today marks a day that will go down in history. Today, President Elect Joe Biden and the Democrats took back this great country, and are preparing for change. This is a change that LGBT Americans have been wanting for the four years since Trump “assumed” office. Now that the election is over, we as LGBT American can have peace, and move forward.

Let’s start with the first part of history that is closest to home, and that is the Democrats are on their way to taking Georgia. The last time that Democrats won Georgia was in 1992 when Former President Clinton became president. If some of you are too young to remember or wasn’t born yet, President Clinton was a awesome president, very cool. I remember getting to school every morning and watching channel one news and seeing things that President Clinton was doing. At that time, I did not know much about politics, but I knew enough that I did not like the Republican party. Georgia is and has been a very conservative state, and the laws here reflect that. For example, in Georgia, a transgender individual can not change their gender marker on their license unless we have corrective surgery done. For those who do not know, gender reassignment surgery is very expensive. When it is for Male-to-Female (MtF) individuals the price can range from $15k to $30k, and for Female-to-Male (FtM) individuals this operation can be around $50k. Most insurance companies do not cover this surgery, so this becomes impossible and far away. Also there are still companies in Georgia that can discriminate against us when it comes to employment. Having Stacey Abrams going to bat for the community, as well as Senate candidate Jon Ossoff, changes are being made in Georgia. Now that Biden is the next president, we can change this state and country to include all Americans once more.

What does the Democrats taking back America mean? As I mentioned before, it means that change is coming. Under Trump’s reign, he has made it clear that he is not “of the people, by the people, for the people” ( Gettysburg Address, President Abraham Lincoln, 1863). Trump has sought out to attack the LGBT community, challenging things like:

  • Transgender military ban,
  • Adoption agency’s being allowed to decline based off of religious beliefs
  • Health care coverage rejection.

These are not the actions of a president that represents all citizens.

Tonight America heard from President Elect Biden and VP Elect Kamala Harris, and they gave a message that could be heard all over the world. Harris being the first woman vice president in history is completely amazing, I hoped but never thought that this would happen in my life time. Biden gave a strong message to the American people, outlining the work that starts on Monday November 9th. This work will included bringing in scientists to help with the Covid-19 Pandemic. The other thing that he said, and this had me in tears, is the inclusion of all people in his speech. To hear President Elect Joe Biden include the Transgender people in his speech shows that there are great things to come. By having Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in office, we have a chance to have protections put into place, we have a chance to live our lives like the rest of Americans, free from bigotry. We have the right of speech, the right to vote, and the right to protest. Our voice has been heard America, and change is coming as the Democrats take back this great nation.

      1. Yes, LGBTQ rights belong back in politics, as well as rights of all Americans. A president needs to be of the people, and for ALL the people. Excited to see what changes Biden and Harris have for this country.
